Staying Present in the moment
There is a lot of talk about staying present in our culture. Mindfulness and meditation practices to help us to stay with and accept the present moment. The thing that you don't often hear referred to is that if you have trauma in your body you do not experience the present moment as safe so you will find that you bounce back into thought easily and frequently. This is not your fault it is a natural mechanism that you have evolved to find safety. When your nervous system is activated, the sensations in the body feel very unsafe and uncomfortable so you disconnect from those sensations and into your mind and thoughts and imaginings. This is a mechanism that kept you safe as a child when you could not do anything else but now as an adult is it limiting and cuts you off from the fullness of life and your own potential. Trauma is not about what happened in the past it is very much present and affecting this moment, the wounding is in the present.
